About this place
At Toiro, a set meal is about more than the main dish: rice, hearty miso soup and side dishes all have a place. The daily set meal is 900 yen and comes with rice, miso soup, a main dish, two side dishes and pickles. The main dish changes from day to day. Diners have mentioned examples such as sardines simmered until tender enough to eat down to the bones, flavoured with amanatsu citrus, and cabbage rolls. One diner chose the daily set meal with kasujiru, a soup made with sake lees, instead, and found the flavours of the main and side dishes nicely balanced.
Another dish to look out for is the house chicken thigh piccata. Listed at 600 yen, it is dipped in beaten egg and grilled. One person who ordered it as a lunch set meal was impressed by the tender meat and generous amount of vegetables. In the evening, another diner enjoyed the piccata as a drinking snack, while others paired drinks with fish dishes. Those who ordered the fish of the day have written about fresh firefly squid with house-made vinegared miso, as well as richly flavoured sardine kizushi—sardines cured in vinegar.
For an extra side dish, there is a small bowl for 220 yen, or an assortment of side dishes for 500 yen. Choose the assortment to sample several dishes, or opt for a rice set if you would prefer to focus on rice and miso soup. One account notes that diners take off their shoes to enter the dining area; the restaurant is also described as a suitable place to eat alone.
